The Big Saloon was built in 1875 for the original 3ft gauge railway. It was used on the line on busy days and apparently could carry 100 people! In 1915, after the 3ft railway was re-gauged to 15inches, the coach was sold and became a garden shed. It is now the oldest surviving English narrow-gauge railway coach, and in 2017 was conserved by Stanegate Restorations with funding from Arts Council England.
