Various scenic routes offer spectacular journeys in fine weather. From the Central Lakes the dramatic Wrynose and Hardknott passes route to  Eskdale but be aware of the 1-in-3 hills, single track road and hairpin bends. Not for the faint-hearted. There are also single track roads over Cold Fell and Corney Fell, though it is usually quicker to take the main roads.
